Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the people of Mariupol – a city of half a million – have been besieged. We have heard from our families and friends, still stranded in our city, that hundreds of thousands remain – with no stable food source, no potable water, little mobile connectivity, electricity, or gas, all in freezing weather conditions. In 2016, an enthusiastic team began a branding project for the city of Mariupol, following a strategic plan for the city. A renewed vision for Mariupol came into being through the ingenuity and artistry of engaged locals with a vested interest in writing a progressive chapter for our city. In just a few years, Mariupol had increasingly become a place of innovation, a place textured through its embrace of creativity and through its fostering of free expression.
On February 24th, 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine, Mariupol quickly turned into a city of horrors – a humanitarian disaster in constant, indiscriminate crisis. Thousands of citizens died in just one month.
Following the tragic unfolding of the Russian invasion, we closed our branding project and have since focused on establishing an online archive of the stories of Mariupol residents. We aim for our work to be a vehicle for the survival of our friends and neighbors — a lifeline in the face of gross injustice and manifest war crimes.
